Both realms are transformed by cooking, and so, in the process, is the cook. That sounds intriguing to memore so than Pollans previous offerings, which I have to confess Ive avoided (but yes, I do know that I should eat food, not too much, mostly plants). Im more interested in thinking and learning about food than in being told what or how to eat, so Im looking forward to meeting Pollan on that middle ground and maybe, just maybe, dripping some coffee or spaghetti sauce onto this pages as I go. Dear Lucy by Julie Sarkissian (Simon Schuster) Okay, so you can be a fan of an author, and a fan of a publisher or imprint, but what about being a fan of an editor? Its not a thing I hear about very often, but I am a die-hard fan of Simon Schusters Sarah Knight, who edits a wide variety of fiction and creative nonfiction, and its always good. Dead Lucy found its way into my mailbox not too long ago, and Ive been saving it for a sunny day when I can gobble it down whole. I love a novel with a unique narrative voice, and this opening bit from the synopsis has me all kinds of excited: Lucy is a young woman with an uncommon voice and unusual way of looking at the world. She would tell you that she is “missing too many words,” but despite her limitations she has a boundless zest for discovery and a deep desire to connect with those around her. Lets Explore Diabetes With Owls by David Sedaris (Little, Brown and Company) Fellow Rioter Emily included this new Sedaris essay collection in her list of 5  books to watch for in April, declaring Sedaris back from the slump that was Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk, and HOO BOY was she right. Sedaris takes us back into his childhood in North Carolina, telling stories about his father (who took off his pants before coming to the dinner table) and the shenanigans he and his siblings had. He takes us to Paris and Beijing and on a book tour across the U.S., and he does it all with his signature humor and wry, occasionally biting observations about human behavior and  American culture. A nice return to classic Sedaris, and if youve never read him, a good entry point! This Is How: Surviving What You Think You Cant by Augusten Burroughs (Picador) You could have knocked me over with a feather when I found out Augusten Burroughs new book wasnt another memoir of dysfunction but instead a self-help title. But it sort of makes sense, you know? His childhood, recounted in  Running With Scissors, was all kinds of horrifying, but Burroughs survived. He became an alcoholic, but he dried out and wrote a book about his experience in rehab (Dry). I am equal parts genuinely interested about how he did this and looky-loo curious about what advice hell be sharing. Many cities continue to spill untreated sewage into nearby lakes and rivers where drinking water is obtained. Industries also pour waste into accessible waters. Pesticides and chemicals in fertilizers wash off farmlands into streams. As a result of this, water purification is becoming harder and more expensive to achieve. Other waste products are ejected into the air, on the ground and into bodies of water. They can end up polluting our water systems and other natural resources. The burning of fossil fuels from factories or power plants can be mixed into water vapors that are present. And gases, such as sulfur and nitrogen oxides, are released into the atmosphere. Acid rain is polluting the water supplies, killing trees and plants,fisheries and water systems. It is undoubtedly evident in areas near power plants, factories and automobiles. An abundance of sewage or chemicals in bodies of water can cause algae to grow which in turns blocks sunlight to marine plants under the waters surface. Animal that feed off these plants would die. The overload of algae and the dead matter builds up over time. Eventually, oxygen supply is expended and bacteria that can live without oxygen takes over. What once was a clean source of water and a habitat for aquatic creatures, is now a tainted, contaminated swamp. Poisonous chemicals that leak into the ground and filter into nearby lakes and rivers which contaminate the water systems can have negative effects on our health. The chemicals from the pesticides can cause damage to our nervous,reproductive and endocrinal body systems. Other contaminants to our water such as lead, nitrates and florides can cause the development of cancers, brain damage and birth defects. Oil spills in the ocean contain many common chemicals that can affect marine ecosystems. The oil spill of 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico was one of the biggest disasters yet. The impact of the oil spill devastated the ecosystem for miles. According to Amadad, after 10 million pounds of oil was cleaned up, the residue planted into the marshlands,killed the vegetation and caused erosion. Birds and turtles washed up on the shore along with the oil. (2018). The dangerous effects that create pollution to our water resources disrupts our ecosystems and their developments. Wildlife that consumes the contaminated water may contact diseases and this can decrease their population. Furthermore, if humans consume the wildlife, plants or seafood that are contaminated by these pollutants, numerous illnesses can be contracted. There has been some progress in the reducing of pollutants in our water systems through the use of chemical filters and devices to control exhaust leaks on automobiles. The Scarlet Letter Vs. The Crusible When the topic of a Puritanical society is brought up, most people think of a rigorous, conservative, highly devout society. While this may have usually been the case, this was not always so. The Puritan society was also known not to act out of brotherly, Christian love, but to cruelly lash out on those who sinned or were deemed unfit for society. Two works of literature that display both aspects of this society very accurately are The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and The Crucible, by Arthur Miller. The Scarlet Letter displays a society that treats two people very differently who commit the sin of adultery together. The woman, Hester Prynne, admits her sin, is forced to always wear a scarlet letter A on her bosom, and is ostracized from society. The man, Reverend Dimmesdale, who hides his sin from the world, is almost worshipped by the townspeople, but is filled with the dishonor of his action. Hawthorne illustrates how insensitive a Puritan society can be to those who adm it their sinful actions. The Crucible is a play that reveals the story of the famous witchcraft trials in Salem, Massachusetts. In the story, Abigail Williams, the orphaned niece of the town?s minister, Reverend Parris, is the main person who accuses people of sending their spirits on her and the other girls. What starts as children dancing in the woods leads to the accusation and execution of many innocent people for witchcraft. The two works of literature, The Crucible and The Scarlet Letter have very similar qualities, including setting, difference, and general aspects of the characters, while there are also specific parallels between characters, such as Abigail and Hester, and Parris and Dimmesdale. The settings in both The Scarlet Letter and The Crucible are similar in many ways. The Scarlet Letter takes place around the 1640s, as The Crucible occurs in 1692. The time period is very important in both pieces, because it is a time of religious intolerance and a conservative attitude pervades in New England, where both works of literature take place. This Puritan setting is also very important in both works of literature. The reason behind the townspeople persecuting sinners is because of the Puritan beliefs of the time period. This is the driving force between the actions of the characters. The setting of a religiously intolerant village is also the main reason behind the conflict that lies in each plot. The conflicts in both works of literature are also similar. The same thing, the excessively devout town in which the setting takes place, causes them both. The conflict in The Scarlet Letter that occurs between Dimmesdale, Hester, and Chillingworth; is caused by the town?s intolerance for sinners. Hester?s life is spent in complete loneliness because of the way the town treats her. Chillingworth, Hester?s past husband, is like most of the townspeople, because he feels the need to punish and inflict pain on sinners, especially those who have personally harmed him. Chillingworth tries to gain revenge on Dimmesdale, the man who commits adultery with his wife. The town?s desire to seek out and personally condemn sinners is also the source of conflict in The Crucible. In The Crucible, the townspeople hunt out the witches in the community as an attempt to rid the town of evil. In both, the conflict is caused by the town?s self appointed right to rancorously persecute and punish anyone who is found sinning. The conflict is also similar because both towns are generally the same. They are both located in the same general area of America, which causes the people to have similar beliefs and traditions. This includes the townspeople, and the general aspects of the characters. The general aspects of characters are also similar in both The Scarlet Letter and The Crucible. Both have a main antagonist, who wishes to punish sinners. Assure- I Mean, Ensure- Good Writing Assure- I Mean, Ensure- Good Writing Assure- I Mean, Ensure- Good Writing By Mark Nichol Once upon a time, professional and amateur writers alike could count on books and publications to help guide them in writing clearly, coherently, and concisely. They knew that when they opened a book, a magazine, or a newspaper, they could generally be assured that they would find carefully crafted prose that adhered to principles of proper grammar, syntax, and usage and would not only enhance comprehension of the content but also serve as a model for their own effective writing. Unfortunately, that assurance has long since ceased to exist across the board. Over the last quarter-century, socioeconomic forces have eviscerated the editorial infrastructure in the publishing world. Into the late twentieth century, at least most book publishers were assiduous in making sure not only that fiction and nonfiction narratives were well constructed but also that attention was paid to the mechanics of sentence structure. In the periodical world, veteran magazine and newspaper editors passed their skills in telling stories (and finessing them down to the detail of using just the right punctuation for the job with each keystroke) to younger editorial staff members, preserving a tradition of editorial excellence even for niche magazines and small-town papers. Not every publication adhered to such high standards, of course, and objectivity was not always maintained (or sought), but readers usually could count, at least, on being exposed to good, clean writing. Those standards have now eroded, thanks in large part to budget cuts in editorial departments and a deterioration in the informal newsroom mentor-protà ©gà © tradition, in addition to a growing indifference in our society to excellent writing. Some publications keep the bar high, but the general readership is exposed to much mediocre writing in print and online media alike, and sloppy prose from one writer infects other writers like a virus, passing on clichà ©s, errors, and poor habits. One recent example stood out for me- perhaps a persnickety detail, but symptomatic of an erosion of precision in usage that encourages lazy writing. In a local metropolitan newspaper, an editorial about the crisis of homelessness misused assured not once, not twice, but thrice: 1. The city needs to evaluate and track people in homeless programs to assure that they are put in the most suitable settings. 2. San Francisco needs to work together with Oakland and San Jose, which are experiencing their own struggles with homelessness, to assure that they are not merely shifting the burden to one another. 3. It would be a colossal waste of money to make the necessary investments in supportive housing and other services without a commensurate commitment to assure that the people who are offered this array of assistance are no longer afforded the option to flout the law with impunity. Careful writers know that assurance does not occur in isolation; it is given. (One would say, for example, â€Å"I assured them that they are not merely shifting the burden to one another.†) The proper word for this context is ensure. (Insure, meanwhile, is best confined to matters of indemnity.) In popular usage, these words are used interchangeably, and historically, they have not always been employed distinctly even by more erudite writers, but preserving such distinctions helps us maintain a rich, diverse language. I’m all for relaxed, flexible usage in in appropriate contexts, but maintaining a firewall between ensure, insure, and assure, or between eager and anxious or between enormity and enormousness, or any such fraternal twins or triplets, helps writers produce and readers consume high-quality prose. If so many book and periodical (and online) publishers have abandoned their traditional role as standard-bearers for good writing, where does the developing writer (read: every writer) go for guidance? Some publishers still strive to deliver well-written content, and many corporate and organizational websites are impressively edited, but ultimately, the careful writer will consult writing guides such as this site and the many excellent writing manuals available in print and sometimes online. Jim, a fleeing slave, and Huck, who fakes his own death, are on a crusade for Freedom from different individual struggles. Mark Twain's, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, reveals Jim and Huck as individuals growing together to mold a relationship which is extremely valid throughout the novel. Jim's relationship to Huck endows devotion, sensitivity, and brotherhood. Jim cherishes Huck as if he was his offspring, and presents Huck with the possibility of seeing him as a guardian. Attila the Hun Essay Attila the Hun is known as one of the most ferocious leaders of ancient times. He was given the nickname Scourge God because of his ferocity. During the twentieth century, Hun was one of the worst name you could call a person, due to Attila. The Huns were a barbaric and savage group of people, and Attila, their leader, was no exception. He was the stereotypical sacker of cities and killer of babies. The Huns lasted long after their disappearance in mythology and folklore, as the bad guy. Generally, they were not fun people to be around. Priscus saw Attila the Hun at a banquet in 448. Priscus described him as being a short, squat man with a large head and deep-set eyes. He also had a flat nose and a thin beard. Historians say that his general personality was irritable, blustering, and truculent. He was said to be a persistent negotiator, and not at al pitiless. While Priscus was at the banquet in 448, he observed a few other details about Attila. All of Attilas chief lieutenants wer e served dainties on silver platters, but he was served only meat on wooden plates. No other real qualities of Attila as a general really survived through time, but he is thought to have been an outstanding commander from his accomplishments as a barbarian. Huns themselves were mysterious and feared people. Theyfirst appeared in the Fourth Century around the Roman Empire. They rode their warhorses around and cause the Germanic barbarians and Romans alike to fear them. Yet, it was said that they were very uncivilized. It was said that they made no use of fire, and just ate the roots of plants they found in fields. They were also said to have eaten the almost raw meat of animals. The only reason the meat was almost raw was because they were said to have cooked it by placing it between their thighs and the backs of their horses to give it warmth. Very little is known of Attilas early life beyond the fact that he was a member of the ruling family of the Huns. Huns are a nomadic Asian people who spread from the Caspian steppes in repeated attacks on the Roman Empire. Before Attilas birth, the Huns reached the Danube River in raids against the Eastern Roman Empire.By AD 432, they had gained so much power that Attilas uncle, the Hunnish King Roas, was receiving a large annual tribute from Rome. Attila gained the throne from his uncle, but atfirst he was sharing it with his brother. Attila put his brother to death in 445. He later advanced through Illyria and devastated the whole region between the Black and the Mediterranean seas. Those that he conquered were not destroyed, but were forced to serve in his armies. Then in 451 with great numbers of Ostrogoths, whom he had conquered, in his army, Attila invaded Gaul in alliance with Gaiseric, king of the Vandals. He was met by the Roman general Flavius Aetius and defeated that same year in the great Battle of Ch;lons. According to all accounts it was one of the most terrible battles of ancient history. The Visigoths, under their King, Theodoric, assisted the Romans. Historians of the period estimated the losses of the army of Attila at from 200,000 to 300,000 slain, a number now believed greatly exaggerated. Aetius wisely allowed the Huns to retreat, pursuing as far as the Rhine River. After his defeat. Attila turned his attention to Italy, where he devastated Aquileia, Milan, Padua, and other cities and advanced upon Rome. Attila had a major impact on the people he invaded; many of the empires he invaded were so devastated that they never would be able to rise as they were before he came.
